The meter is a very important unit of measure.
The meter started out as a length one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator. But, now it is defined as 1,650,763.73 times the wavelength of orange-red krypton 86. But, you don't have to remember that.
Look carefully, now, at my family portraits. Our names do mean something.
My godfather the meter is the standard unit of length.
Grandpapa centimeter means one hundredth of a meter.
And, since my name's millimeter, I mean one thousandth of a meter
You may even know some other members of my family.
There's decameter and hectometer and then there's cousin decimeter, who measures tenths of a meter. You must have heard of deci ... he's a drummer in a Latin American rock group.
And of course there's uncle kilometer.
Ut, oh, even the cops know about uncle kilometer.
Anyone who carries a violin case and has a name like kilo... oh, well, he certainly does get around.
