If I tell you the correct number, I get to say a number and you must tell me what comes after it. "If I say nine, you tell me that number that comes after nine." The Child: "Ten." The Adult: "Right. Now you get to pick a number." The Child: "Six." The Adult: "Seven. Am I right? Does seven come after six?" The Child: "Yes. You go." The Adult: "Twelve." The Child: "Thirteen. Nineteen." The Adult: "Twenty. Thirty-three." The Child, with thought: "Thirty-four. Fifty-one." The Adult: "Fifty-two. Hmm, ninety-nine." The Child: "One hundred."
At a later time: The Adult: "We could play a harder game if you'd like." The Child: "O. K." The Adult: "I say a number and you tell me the number that comes before it. Twenty-three." The Child: "Twenty-two. Now is it my turn?" The Adult: "Yes." The Child: "Sixty-seven." The Adult says, "Sixty-eight," then pauses. The Child: "But, that comes after sixty-seven." The Adult: "That means you get to go again. Maybe you should give me an easier number." The Child: "O. K. Nine." The Adult: "Eight. Thirteen." The Child: "Twelve. Two." The Adult: "Oh, Luis, that's too easy. One. You try this one: it's pretty hard. Fifty." The Child with a large smile says, "Forty-nine."
