Spring 2023 Announcements 2. =============== 12:57 PM 2/20/2023 ========== Hi. It will not be midterm for another month, but, you have no tests between now and then, so, your midterm averages are now posted. Quizzes, Weekly Reports, & the Leter grade is not computed till the end of the semester. These correspond to 100-70% is S for satisfactory; 69-58% for D; less than 58% for F. I gave students with averages of 58 or 59% D grades though thet are really F grades. This email has a few purposes: 1. to return the graded Test2 to you. 2. to reply to comments "you" have made in your Weekly Reports. 3. to make suggestions regarding your Weekly Reports and Test Summaries. 4. to give to you a really good Test Summary as an example. stay safe, see you in class, a^2 My comments, in general: If your average is below 55%, it might help to see me at least weekly to do homework together or you might get a tutor, because, you probably will not pass with a C grade or better as things stand now. If you wish an office hour, request a time & day by sending me a pink-box stating the day and time on my schedule below the box on the left. I am still working on the email issues. If you are still having a problem, particularly students with numbers 19, 25, 67, 69, and 74, PLEASE pink-box me again w/issue. Replies to your comments: 1. A Student wrote, "I would like to request an office hour on Monday" My reply: As stated in the pink box on http://www.mathnstuff.com/math/math.htm If you "Wish an office hour to chat or review grades? Request a day & time listed on my schedule & await a reply." PLEASE REQUEST A TIME. office: Monday 3:30-5:30, Tuesday 11:30-2:00 https://middlesexcc-edu.zoom.us/j/96308421903 Wednesday 11:30-12:00 https://middlesexcc-edu.zoom.us/j/96505888593 --------------- 2. A Student wrote, "there is no way I can have a printer in the room with me for tests." My reply: You will need at printer at the computer as stated in class on the 1st day. "Do NOT leave the video/camera screen, while taking a quiz or test: to use the bathroom or to print the assignment," Check with the General Counseling Department at counseling@middlesexcc.edu to see if the College can loan you a printer. -------------- About your weekly reports: Think "topic sentence." Then, write additional info/facts. example 1: ------------------- The item below is NOT A SUMMARY ------------- ------------------- The item below is a "journal entry," perhaps something you were required to do in high school. It is not a summary. ------------------------------ report: W2 summary: Calc I, Tuesday February 7th.' Basic Differentiation Rule [2.3] We went over and reviewed more information on derivatives. We went over the power function and the equation for it. We also briefly mentioned some special case derivatives like the derivative of sin(x) being cos(x) ----------------- end example 1 ------------------------- example 2: ------------------- The item below is NOT A SUMMARY. ------------- ------------------- This is an unacknowledged quote from the book which begins, "A common amusement park ride..." --------------- report: W2 summary: Instantaneous Rates of Change: The DerivaƟve A common amusement park ride liŌs riders to a height then allows them to freefall a certain distance before safely stopping them. Suppose such a ride drops riders from a height of 150 feet. Students of physics may recall that the height (in feet) of the riders, t seconds aŌer freefall (and ignoring air resistance, etc.) can be accurately modeled by f(t) = −16t 2 + 150. Using this formula, it is easy to verify that, without intervenƟon, the riders will hit the ground at t = 2.5 √ 1.5 ≈ 3.06 seconds. Suppose the designers of the ride decide to begin slowing the riders’ fall aŌer 2 seconds (corresponding to a height of 86 Ō.). How fast will the riders be traveling at that Ɵme? We have been given a posiƟon funcƟon, but what we want to compute is a velocity at a specific point in Ɵme, i.e., we want an instantaneous velocity. We do not currently know how to calculate this. ----------------- end example 2 ------------------------- example 3: ---------------- The item below not complete enough. ------------- -----------------The meat is missing. At least the quadratic in general ax^2 + bx + c form and in standard a(x-h)^2 + k form should be included and perhaps the coordinates of the vertex in each format. --------------- report: W3 summary: a. Quadratic Functions (5.1,5.2) b. Quadratic functions can be written in multiple forms both standard form if general form is given as well as general form if standard form is given. A quadratic is also the product of a line x a line so (line)(line). ----------------- end example 3 ------------------------- example 4: ------------------- The item below is WRONG! ------------- ------------------- First sentence is good. Second sentence is very wrong. ----------- ---------- The quotient rule is d(f(x)/g(x)) = [f'(x)g(x) - g'(x)f(x)]/(g(x))^2, the derivative of the first times the second minus the derivative of the second times the first, all over the seconds quared. ----------- ---------- The difference quotient is (f(x+h) - f(x))/h ---------- The limit of the difference quotient, as h goes to zero, is the derivative of f(x). --------------------- report: W3 summary: In calc I, February 14th topic is a. Product and Quotient Rules[2.4] b. The quotient rule is a method for differentiating problems where one function is divided by another. The quotient rule is lim h-> 0 ((x+h)^2 - x^2)/h ----------------- end example 4 ------------------------- ------------------------------------ About your Test Summaries: --------------------------------------- Many students wrote good Summaries. With her permission, I have attached Alyssa Aure's S2, CHAPTER TWO SUMMARY, DERIVATIVE as an example of quality work. It is inclusive, organized, clean, MUCH MORE IMPRESSSIVE THAN IT NEEDS TO BE , but, something each of you might have produced, and a WORK WHICH ALYSSA DID PRODUCE. For a Summary, perhaps think, "I'll probably never need this after this course, but, in 10 or 15 years when my child takes precalc or trig or calc, even though I forgot most of my math, I have this ready source to refresh my memory without having to look stuff up or read the book. And, it's an easy grade, if I don't do it I don't earn the points it is worth, and I can use it on the test & final." example 5: ------------------- This has some good stuff, some incomplete stuff, and some incorrect stuff. ------------ Summary The main topic we have been talking about is solving derivatives. The main point about the derivative is that to get it, take fx) = ax^n and make it f(x) = anx^(n-1). This was the power function. You first multiply the efficiency by the exponent. Then copy the base and decrease the exponent by 1. We also looked at many unique instances of derivatives like the derivative of e^x being e^x or the derivative of sin(x) being cos(x). We then used the derivative song in order to learn even more advanced questions on solving derivatives. ------------- See you in class. a^2 1.
