IN MATH: 1. n. short for the result of a square, cube, or other fractional exponentiation. EX. Five root six,, is a short way of saying five times the square root of six. 2. n. solution to an equation.

EX. The roots of (x + 1)(x - 3) = 0 are -1 and 3.

IN ENGLISH: 1. n. the source. EX. It is said: Money is the root of all evil, but I don't believe that. 2. n. the underground part of a plant. EX. Potato plants have large root sys tems.
