Coordinates, numbers stated in a specific
order, name places -- on paper, on earth, in space. The
abscissa (left-right) come first and the
ordinate (up-down) come next. For example,
the point (2, 4) is 2 spaces to the right and 4 spaces up.
The numbers originate, start, where the two number lines cross, the point called the
origin. The
horizontal number line or x-axis goes from left to right. The
vertical number line or y-axis goes up and down.
Notice on each number line that there are positive numbers
on one side and negative numbers on the other. The origin has coordinates which are the boundary between
negative and positive. The origin has the coordinates (0,0).

- 2. The vertical number line is called the ____y-axis___.
- 3. The point where the number lines cross at
right angles (
perpendicular) is called _ the origin__.
-
- 4. Using coordinates, (left-right, up-down), name the points on the above plane.

G. __(0,4)__ | the origin _(0,0)___ |
- 5. IN ORDER, on the above plane, draw these 4 connect-the-points pictures.
- Start at the first point, draw a line from there to the 2nd point, and so on through to each point, to the ending point.
