Statistics Lab 3 - Normal Distribution Probabilities

Hi,

Today you will be completing and handing in printed problems, have an additional assignment, and email your spreadsheet to the prof. Your work will not be inspected in class.

Today you will:
  • Obtain printed questions from the prof.
  • Open the spreadsheet you created during the last lab.
  • Use and label a new page.
  • Copy graphics from this page to your spreadsheet and take notes.
  • Make and test cells which compute probabilities given a normal distribution.
  • For today's material:
a.) Write and answer a "between" probability problem.
b.) Write and answer a "below" probability problem.
c.) Write and answer an "above" probability problem.
  • For homework. (It's due next class BEFORE the test, but complete it today, if possible):
d.) Write and answer an expected value problem involving a loose event and 2 win events.
e.) Write and answer compute a mean and standard deviation problem having no more than 5 pieces of data.
  • Hand in classwork. Email spreadsheet to prof.
  • Be reminded of the TEST and homework assignment.

1. Open the spreadsheet you created during the last lab.
On a clean page begin today's work.

Type your name, "Lab 3 - Normal Distribution Probabilities," and the date on the top of the worksheet.

Stay within the first K columns as you complete your work.

Double-click on the tab at the bottom of today's lab's worksheet and label it "lab3 dec2."

2. You are going to create a page that looks similar to this then use it to check the math on problems you write.

Copy these 3 graphics onto your spreadsheet.

3. Make tables to compute the three kinds of probabilities.

Here are the Excel® formulas you need.  The words a, b, mean, and standard deviation are the CELL LOCATIONS in the table.

P(x < a) is =NORMDIST(a,mean,standard deviation,TRUE)
P(x > a) is =NORMDIST(a,mean,standard deviation,FALSE)
P(b < x < a) is =NORMDIST(a,mean, standard deviation,true) - NORMDIST(b,mean,standard deviation,true)

Use the data listed in the picture to test your self-computing cells.

4. Write and answer 3 probability questions using the tables you created.

For today's material:
a.) Write and answer a "between" probability problem.
b.) Write and answer a "below" probability problem.
c.) Write and answer an "above" probability problem.

Use this paper or paper received from the prof.

5. Write and answer 2 review for the final home work problems using the labs you completed to assist you.

For homework. (It's due next class BEFORE the test, but complete it today, if possible):
d.) Write and answer an expected value problem with 2 events which lose money and 1 event in which money is won.
e.) Write and answer compute a mean and standard deviation problem having no more than 5 pieces of data.

Use this paper or paper received from the prof.

6. Email your spread sheet to yourself and to your prof (AAzzolino@middlesexcc.edu).
7. Hand in your work.
8. Homework:
a.Study for the TEST.
b. Complete your "Cheat Sheet" to hand in for a grade.
